A primary headache disorder that is characterized by frequent moderate to severe headaches defines a migraine. Migraines are pulsating in nature and affect generally only half of the human head. The migraines last for approximately 3 days. Some of the common symptoms include but are not limited to sensitivity to smell, sound or to light, nausea and vomiting. Physical activities worsen the migraine pain. Generally, 1/3 of the population that experience migraine headaches have aura. The pain phase is also known as the headache phase and the postdrome phase is the effects that happen after the migraine is essentially over.

The underlying causes for migraine headaches are unknown still to this day and age. A common medical wives’ tale is that migraines only occurred in highly intelligent individuals, but research has shown that this is actually not the case.
